No Water In My House What To Do If Water Suddenly Stops

Your house has a main water valve, usually located near the meter; the valve controls the flow of water into your home’s pipes. Opening a half-shut valve is one of the quickest ways for increasing home water pressure. It is important to understand the frequency and severity of your issue to determine what you are willing to do to resolve the situation. Costs to replace your service line can range greatly depending on the diameter of the pipe entering the house, the material used, and the length of the pipe required. On average, the replacement of your water line will cost approximately $2250.

Shared pipelines are pipelines that run water into more than one house. What that entails is that when your neighbor takes a shower or washes their car, your water pressure is going to go down. This doesn’t mean that you’re paying for their water usage, but it does mean that your water supply is divided between two or more households. Between showering, running the dishwasher, and flushing the toilet, American families use an average of 300 gallons ofwater a day. We tend not to think about where that water comes from or how it comes out of our faucets. Most of us don’t know where to look if the water pressure drops.

Clean or Replace the Aerator

So you need to let your local representative know that it needs to be fixed as soon as possible. In some cases, you may have to consider replacing your water service supply line to the street. It might be time for you to service your tankless water heater. Remove the aerators on your low-pressure faucets and see if they need cleaning.

IF the valve is the main water supply valve for your home, this is beyond the scope of most do-it-yourselfers. Contact a licensed plumber who can work with the water department to get this repair accomplished. The number one cause of low pressure is represented by faulty fixtures.

Low Cold Water Pressure / Normal Hot Water Pressure

If this trick doesn’t increase water pressure and you believe there is a more severe mineral clog inside the pipes, call in a plumber to assess and correct the problem. While we can’t fight with your water supply company or city representatives, we can help you with anyissues related to your pipesto increase water pressure in your home. While this will likely be a costly solution, the alternative can be far more expensive if your water line eventually gives out and damages the interior of your home. A plumber can help you identify the exact area that is preventing water flow and replace this section of the pipe.

In any of these cases, the pressure loss will be temporary. But when the water does come back online, it will definitely kick up sediment, which can clog supply valves and faucet aerators. Be prepared to flush them if the pressure seems low when the water comes back on. Fire hydrants can freeze or fill with sludge, so cities typically flush them semi-annually to ensure they’re clear. This can cause serious, though temporary, water pressure issues in the houses down the line.

Low Water Pressure in the Sink

If you have plenty of cold pressure and low hot pressure, then that is most likely the result of the valve itself. In that case, you will need to dislodge the debris that's caught up inside the actual handle where you demand the water. Test your water faucets again to see if the problem is resolved. Another common issue many homeowners face is temperature-specific low pressure, where only the hot or cold water supply is affected.

In many homes, there are two major shutoff valves controlling water to the home. The first is the water meter valve, located right next to the water meter on the main city supply pipe serving your home. Normally, you will not use this valve, as technically it belongs to the water company and is typically used only by water company personnel. But if your water pressure is low throughout your house, especially after some work has been done on your plumbing system, it's possible that this valve is not fully open. In many homes connected to a municipal water supply line, two main valves control the water flow into the house.

Corroded Plumbing

Copper pipes should be used for a minimum of 50 years and brass ones for at least 40 years. The root cause for no water in your home may come from outside your home. If a major municipal water pipe breaks, your water provider will switch off the entire line. This will effectively shut off your water until that water main break is fixed. This is usually an easy step if you're friendly with your neighbors.

The factory default is usually 50 psi, but may have been set lower by a previous owner or is simply too low to properly supply a larger home. The first thing you should do is check the shutoff valve on the water heater. Sometimes, people forget to open it up all the way, which can cause the pressure to be a little wonky. If the water flow is not restored to normal, the source of low water pressure is likely not the specific faucet but an overall problem. The easiest way to increase the water pressure in the shower is to replace the shower head with a high-pressure model.

Step 1: Check Another Sink

Eventually, this buildup can disrupt the hot water pressure in your home. So, if your hot water pressure seems abnormally low, sediment may be the issue. Shut off your water main and ensure your pipes are completely drained by running your faucets until water flow stops. Run the taps farthest from your water main to draw the water away from the area you’re working.

One of the most serious and potentially expensive causes of low water pressure in your home is old, corroded galvanized steel water pipes. Over years or decades, these pipes can corrode so much that they restrict water flow significantly. What’s more, they often corrode internally, so you can’t see the corrosion. It’s when they clog up over time due to the buildup of corrosion and scale that you realize there’s a problem. That means you won’t notice a sudden pressure drop in most cases. But if you move into a house with old steel pipes, the pipes may already have significant corrosion, and the problem may worsen relatively quickly.

Step 3 – With the Water Running, Flush the Toilets

That’s why we explained every possible scenario that can happen when water pressure suddenly drops below 20 PSI. In some cases, you can easily fix the problem, and on the other hand, a professional is required. A sudden drop in water pressure inside a house is quite annoying, especially if you are in the middle of your chores, like washing dishes.

Even though I am no longer offering my services, my friends and family have been asking me for plumbing advice. Hence, I decided to start this blog to help them and address some common plumbing issues. In that light, we are here to discuss everything you need to know about low water pressure in your house, and why it dropped all of a sudden. The main shut-off valve, which is where water enters your home, should also be checked to ensure it is fully open. The main shut-off valve can be located inside or outside your home and is often found near the water heater.

But if you don't have a permanent gauge, it is very easy to do a periodic test with a standard water pressure gauge. For one, your well could be running dry, or the well pump could be on the fritz. Also, a half-shut supply valve or leaks could be robbing potential pressure.
